What is emotion dysregulation ?

When we respond to a trigger or experience, in a highly reactive way on a regular basis this is called emotion dysregulation.   Experiencing emotions dysregulation can be very frightening because your responses can be hard to control.  People close to you can be deeply affected.  These responses can interfere with employment, relationships and further affect your mental health.

Emotion dysregulation can come be a result of:

  • Trauma

  • PTSD

  • Domestic violence

  • Mood disorder

  • Disturbing childhood experiences

I have found that counselling can be a very effective way to deal with this issue.  There are many ways to assist people experiencing emotion dysregulation. I often start with a Compassion based approach, which uncovers how you feel about yourself.  Then we will create a personal plan for how to deal with strong emotion.
